Cycle of life and death

Portugal, 2022

The "Cycle of Life and Death" series consists of four installations that explore the volatility of life and death. These installations are presented in double-sided boxes to symbolize the duality of life, where the material and the subtle coexist from conception until death, when this duality ceases to exist.

The Embryo: This installation features a small, resilient metal structure housing an unlit lamp, symbolizing the potential for life. It is encased in a soft layer, evoking the mother's womb, where life begins.

The Body: Duality is starkly represented here. One side is blue, symbolizing the soul's lightness with spheres suspended by transparent threads, free to move. The other side is blood red, with nails pointing towards a tangle of wires, representing the physical body's suffering and the struggle to adapt to the world.

The Time: This all-white box features waves on one side, symbolizing the fluctuations of time and space. The opposite side contains a transparent box within another transparent surface, illustrating the intangibility and constructed nature of time, emphasizing its subtle and relative qualities.

Death: Unlike the other pieces, this installation does not have two sides but features a mirror at its center. The rusty exterior alludes to the journey of life, while the mirror forces the viewer to confront their own self, symbolizing the final moment when the soul disconnects from the body and the self disappears.

Each box in the series intricately portrays different stages of existence, reflecting the complex interplay between the material and the immaterial, and ultimately leading to the inevitable conclusion of death, where duality ends.
